An uniquely innovative art show, titled Skate Break Create, is slated to amaze audiences at the premises of Tangalwood starting July 1. At a pre-event held at the location on Wednesday, organisers, Kapi101 and Skate Nepal Skate, unveiled a teaser exhibition for the show and spoke about their efforts to harness the creativity of local artists while pushing them to explore new and exciting mediums to express their voices.
The Skate Break Create Project, according to the organisers, is a union of two distinct and up-and-coming scenes in Nepal—the skateboarding scene and the visual arts community. The collaborative exhibition includes artworks of dozen of artists in the city who have swapped their canvasses for skateboards.
Speaking during the event, Aditya Aryal, a skater and one of the organisers, mentioned, “This is something we have never done before, I skate a lot and we have a lot of people involved in this. In the past, we didn’t know how to make good use of our broken skateboards and then idea to allow artists to paint it came up.
The main idea to exhibit the skateboards was to showcase the different styles using broken skateboards as the common canvas.”
“This is something really exciting, we have never tried something like this before. Through the sales of artworks on display we plan to donate 50 percent of the profit towards the artists and the other half to Skate Nepal Skate,” said Samip Khadka, a member of Skate Nepal Skate—an organisation working towards fostering the skate-boarding scene in the country.
“I started painting about two-three days back and I just completed it an hour ago,” Shishir Man Pradhan, an artist, proudly shared, pointing at his work—a tribute to Muhammad Ali. “I’d love to do more of this, it is rejuvenating to just pull out your brush and do what you love.”
The skateboard art exhibition will launch on July 1, with more artwork joining the ranks. The exhibition will also include other artwork and merchandise for sale.
