The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has come up with “one ward, one park” plan, aiming to create more open/green spaces in Kathmandu.
The importance of open space in Kathmandu was highly felt after the devastating Gorkha Earthquake last year .
Officials at the KMC said since June the metropolis has started constructing seven parks in different wards.
One park each is being constructed in wards 18, 35, 15, 14 and 4. The KMC has also identified land for the Ministry of Environment for constructing two parks in ward number 7.
For the construction, the metropolis has allocated Rs 4.2 million, according to KMC’s Environment Division Chief Rabin Man Shrestha. Construction works are expected to be completed by July 9, said Shrestha.
The KMC has invested Rs 1.8 million in ward number 4 in Tusal area and Rs 1.5 million in ward number 14 in Kuleshwor area.
The KMC and local community have allocated Rs 900,000 and Rs one million respectively in ward number 15 in Dallu area.
The metropolis will build parks in other wards by next year, according to Shrestha. There are 35 wards in Kathmandu.
Shrestha informed that the metropolis will be allocating over Rs 20 million to construct parks in the remaining areas for the next fiscal year.
Kathmandu residents have welcomed the KMC move of constructing parks.
A metropolis report shows that there are 83 open spaces in Kathmandu, these have not been managed properly.
