“Many places in the southern plains could see rise in water levels in major rivers and tributaries originating from Chure region, increasing the risks of flashfloods,” said Binod Parajuli, a hydrologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The rivers and rivulets originating from Chure and flowing downstream through many Central, Eastern and Western Tarai districts, like Kankai, Macheli, Duduwa and Mohana are expected to see flooding events due to heavy rains, Parajuli said.
Water levels at major rivers, including Karnali, Mahakali, Babai and West Rapti, are also expected to exceed the warning marks.
“Continuous rains with dark clouds are expected across the country, including in Kathmandu and many places of western Nepal, in the next few days. This calls for high alert among the communities who are living at the high risk of flooding in Tarai districts this monsoon,” Parajuli said.
Out of total 44 monitoring stations set up in major rivers across the country to monitor the water flow, 14 stations recorded rising water level until 6:30 pm on Saturday, while none of the rivers recorded water level reaching above the danger level.
Incessant rainfall, particularly in the mid-hill and Tarai districts, has triggered floods and landslides, killing at least five people since Wednesday.
