Eight people were killed in Rajbara and Punja villages in Phythan district after a landslide buried two houses while the victims were sleeping on Tuesday morning. Five members of a family were killed when the rain-triggered landslide buried the house belonging to Durga Malla.
Malla and his wife, along with three children, were crushed when their house collapsed after being hit by the landslide at around 2:45am on Tuesday morning, according to Ranjit Singh Rathore, the Gorkha district police chief.
In Pyuthan, three family members were killed after the landslide hit the house they were sleeping in at Punja-3. Hom Bahadur Sunar, 65, his wife Satya Devi Sunar and six-year-old granddaughter Sima Sunar died in the disaster on Tuesday morning. Another family of three escaped the disaster in the same area with minor injuries. The Pyuthan District Disaster Relief Committee released Rs5000 for each of the deceased for the funeral. “We have decided to provide Rs40,000 for each of the dead in compensation on Wednesday,” said Janak Raj Pant, the committee coordinator.
