The District Disaster Management Committee has said it will carry out a controlled explosion to drain the water from a debris dam created in the Tamor river at Sawadin VDC in Taplejung district.
Boulders falling from the Nakla cliff after a massive landslide on Sunday blocked the river, obstructing the flow of water and creating the debris dam, which has exposed the downstream settlements at risk of flooding.
Acting Chief District Officer Surendra Bhattarai said the DDMC will wait for a day or two before taking a decision. “If water level continues to rise in the landslide dam and fails to find its course naturally, we will carry out a controlled explosion to drain the water,” said Bhattarai, adding that there is no risk as such as of now. “We expect the water level to decrease naturally,” said Bhattarai.
A team of police has been deployed at the site to provide updates.
According to the District Police Office, water level in the landslide has decreased, but the District Soil Conservation Office said it is the same.
District Soil Conservation Officer Hari Bahadur Kunwar said, “We cannot say anything right now.”
Pawan Shrestha, a local, said 13 families of Mitlung bazaar have been moved to safer locations. Gopal Shrestha, another local, said as many as 26 families of Handrung bazaar have already moved to Taplejung Municipality.
