The government and the indigenous nationalities would formally observe International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples from upcoming year.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal made that remark while addressing a function organised in the Capital on Tuesday by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities on the occasion of the 22nd International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Similarly, the two parties signed a three-point deal with the agitating Madhesi parties to amend some provisions in the new constitution to address their grievances.

The objective of the formation of the new government was to ensure everyone’s ownership to the constitution, he said, adding that the nation could not prosper until

there is a strong national unity.

Pledging to give his utmost for the interest of the indigenous nationalities, PM Dahal added, “There will be a sincere effort to embrace the sentiments of all in the constitution. I need everyone’s continued backing and support for this.”

Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel shared his concerns over the diminishing identity and culture of the indigenous nationalities.

“It is our identity that we showcase in front of the world community. There is foreign intervention in our identity. We need to put in a sincere effort to ward it off,” Poudel said.

Speaking at the programme, Maoist Centre leader Barshaman Pun said the implementation of the new constitution is only possible when the rights of the indigenous nationalities are ensured, which in turn would lead the country towards prosperity.
