NHRC asks govt to address Ganga Maya’s demands
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to save the life of Ganga Maya Adhikari, who has resumed her fast-unto-death protest from August 11 demanding arrest of the persons involved in the murder of her teenage son Krishna Prasad Adhikari. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to save the life of Ganga Maya Adhikari, who has resumed her fast-unto-death protest from August 11 demanding arrest of the persons involved in the murder of her teenage son Krishna Prasad Adhikari.
Krishna Prasad was allegedly abducted and killed by the then Maoist rebels in 2004.
Ganga Maya was admitted to the intensive care ward in Bir Hospital on Sunday.
Noting that her health was deteriorating rapidly, the NHRC has asked the government to address her concerns.
Ganga Maya along with her husband Nanda Prasad had started a fast-onto-death, demanding justice for their murdered son in 2013 as well. Nanda Prasad died last year during the hunger strike while Ganga Maya had agreed to end her hunger strike two years ago.
She decided to stage another fast-onto-death right after the CPN (Maoist Centre) formed a coalition government with Nepali Congress. She believes that the Maoist party has been obstructing the justice process.
Rights defender Charan Prasai said that the government should at least implement the Supreme Court’s order to investigate into the case by arresting Chhabilal Poudel, one of the accused.
Poudel, who was arrested earlier, was released on bail at the orders of Chitwan District Court and Hetauda Appellate Court.
Officials at the Chitwan District Court said Poudel’s hearing is scheduled to take place on August 22. Meanwhile, police briefly detained 11 rights activists for demonstrating outside the prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Sunday. They were demanding justice for Ganga Maya.
Police said the demonstrators were detained for protesting in restricted zone.
