Classical music fest to kick off in the Capital
The second edition of the Gharana Music Festival is slated to commence in the Capital beginning today.The second edition of the Gharana Music Festival is slated to commence in the Capital beginning today. The five-day fest will feature expanded concerts, workshops and masterclasses, and will take place at two venues in the Capital-Hotel Yak & Yeti in Durbarmarg and Tangalwood in Tangal. The classic music fest will serve as a platform will feature a variety of both eastern and western classical music.
Daniel Linden, founder and president of the festival, shares: “Following last year’s well-attended fair, we have decided to introduce a new variety of classical music—chamber music and other eastern and western folk sensibilities—for this year’s gala.” The fest features musicians from both Nepal and abroad. Performing during the event will be classical guitarists Brendan Evans (USA), Paul Cesarczyk (Poland/USA) and Rupert Boyd (Australia); Nepali didgeridoo player SalilSubedi; Rabin LalShrestha (Nepal) on percussion; cellist Laura Metcalf (USA); pianist NeeciaMajolly (India); violinist Rebecca Jackson (USA); cellist Franck Bernede with the Singhini Consort (France/Nepal); Night (Nepal); KANTA dAbdAb (Nepal); and vocalists Inoue Sou (Japan) and Vishal Bhattarai (Nepal), among others. Along with musical performances the event will also provide workshops and masterclasses for aspiring musicians.
Speaking to the Post, Jeny Shrestha, the event co-ordinator, said, “This year, along with an impressive line-up of local and international artists, we are also hosting a master class where students will be playing their original compositions to composers who will then give their views on the pieces. Some of the participating students are as young as eight years old and this will be a tremendous encouragement for them.” The fest will also see the launching of a program that will introduce a classical guitar curriculum at the Early Childhood Development Center, an organisation founded by the CNN Hero of the Year Pushpa Basnet.
Apart from different shows and workshops being held at Hotel Yak and Yeti, co-hosts Tangalwood in Tangal will serve as the venue for an open concert on Saturday. Nepali fusion ensembles Kanta dAb dAb
and Night headlining the show along with the various international artists who have descended to the Capital for the festival.
The classical music fest is being organised by the Gharana Music Foundation in association with Sushila Arts Academy, D’Addario Foundation, Yamaha, Austin Classical Guitar, and Tangalwood.
