Six-year-old Bipen Yonjan of Chungmang-2 in Dhankuta district died after being swept away by the flooded Jyamire stream while he was on his way to school. In Morang, a man in his forties drowned in the flooded Mawa stream.
About 120 people from 20 households have been displaced at Bakari in Biratnagar-13, Morang, as the settlement was inundated by rain waters. They are taking shelter at a local school building. Various places in Biratnagar Sub-metropolis were waterlogged due to heavy rains. Tintoloya, Devkotachowk, Pokhariya, Buspark, Mahendrachowk, Roadsheshchowk, Mills area among other places were inundated. According to police, 16 houses at Simarahi in Biratnagar-16 were inundated in the floods.
In Sunsari, at least 56 houses in southern VDCs have been inundated. Tanmuna and Chhitaha VDCs have been hit hard. Thirty families were displaced at Itahara-3 in Sunsari as the flood waters from the Bakraha stream entered the settlement.
According to Rabindranath Chaube, the chief at Agriculture Development Office in Sunsari, around 500 hectares of vegetable farm were destroyed by floods, causing an estimated damage of Rs 5 million.
Meanwhile, water level in the Saptakoshi river has increased because of continuous rain the area. The water flow in Saptakoshi was recorded at 180,065 cusec on Sunday.
Twenty-four of the 56 floodgates of Koshi Barrage have been lifted to bring down the water level.
