Cabinet fails to dwell on Dr KC’s demands

- Post Report, Kathmandu

Sep 28, 2016- Even as Dr Govinda KC’s ninth hunger strike entered second day on Tuesday, the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday failed to dwell on his demands.

Although Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal sought briefing from Health Minister Gagan Thapa, there was no specific agenda to address Dr KC’s demand.
The orthopaedic surgeon began his latest fast-unto-death on Monday, demanding the government begin the impeachment process against Chief Commissioner of the anti-grant body CIAA Lokman Singh Karki and Commissioner Raj Narayan Pathak. He had called off the previous hunger strike on July 25 after 16 days, after the government agreed to address some of his demands. “The government has repeatedly cheated us. On the surface, you might think that things are moving forward, but it is not,” said Dr KC.
His demands also include endorsement of health profession education bill; implement medical education fee as suggested by the Mathema committee and scrapping
of a committee comprising representatives of private medical college and
appointment of dean at the Institute of Medicine based on seniority. Dr KC has already staged eight fasts, demanding reforms in medical education.
