Dengue has downed as many as 31 patients in Chitwan in the past one month, the District Public Health Office (DPHO) said.
The DPHO officials said 31 of the 200 people tested for the disease have tested positive since mid-August.
The patients are undergoing treatment at Narayani Community Hospital, New Medical College, Bharatpur Hospital and Ratnanagar Hospital, said Ram Kumar KC, vector control officer at the DPHO.
Chitwan was caught in a dengue crisis in 2010/11 when 739 people were infected. Five deaths were reported then. Last year, dengue was reported in 85 people in the district. Most of them were from Bharatpur area.
This year, KC said, a majority of the patients are from Ratnanagar area. The DPHO has started awareness campaigns against dengue in the district this year as well.
Dengue is an infectious disease usually contracted from mosquitoes belonging to the Aedes Aegypti genus. The larvae of these mosquitoes usually breed in stagnant water found in broken glass bottles, flowerpots, used tires, and broken eggshells among others.
