A community’s quest for dignity
The exhibit traces the trials and tribulations the dalit community went through to preserve its heritage through historyPatan Museum is currently hosting a photography exhibition—titled Dalit: A Quest for Dignity—that boasts a total of 80 historical and contemporary photos portraying the diverse aspects of the marginalised dalit community’s society and culture. The exhibit is being organised by Nepal Picture Library.
The exhibit traces the many trials and tribulations the dalit community went through to preserve its heritage through the recent history; alongside, the photographs also depict how the community has succeeded in preserving its heritage and its dignity.
Social activist Umadevi Badi, who is featured in one of the photographs on display, said, “As long as the discrimination that the dalit community continues to persist, our goal of eradicating the existing economic gap among the communities will not materialise.”
Similarly, artist and lecturer Sujan Chitrakar noted, “This exhibit that focuses on the dalit community does present the voice of the marginalised community in an effective way. The photos not only speak of one particular community but also of the current picture of Nepali society as a whole.” The organisers aim to publish a book compiling the photographs being displayed at the event.
The exhibit will run until November 11.
