Rs 9 billion spent on relief for conflict-affected people

The government has spent nearly Rs9 billion in relief for the conflict-hit people as well as those affected during the 2006 people’s movement as of the fiscal year 2015-16.
According to the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, a total of Rs8.97 billion was spent on relief to 111,379 people suffering in different ways due to the conflict and the people’s movement since the peace process began in 2006. The highest amount went to the next kin of those killed during the conflict. They received a total of Rs5.84 billion in three phases.
Although the registered number of those killed during the conflict is 17,886, the kin of all of them were not compensated for. In the first phase, 14,418 family members of conflict victims got compensation while in the second and third phases, 10,810 and 11,302 family members received the aid.
“Although we sent the compensation amount meant for the kin of those killed during the conflict to the District Administration Offices for distribution, the DAOs did not receive claims from all the beneficiaries,” said Dev Bahadur Adhikari, information officer at the Peace Ministry.
The next of kin of those disappeared were also provided Rs500,000 each in three different phases, as in the case of those killed during the conflict. They received a total of Rs691.40 million as of the last fiscal year, according to the ministry.
Of the 9,000 civilians killed during the Maoist insurgency, a total of 4,649 single women received the relief package. Besides, as many as 652 wives of the disappeared males got the relief package.
Aid was distributed also to the displaced people, those facing damage to property and the individuals who suffered injuries during the conflict.
Relief package was also distributed to the conflict-affected people as recommended by the National Human Rights Commission in the form of employment and self-employment training programmes.
The government also provides monthly allowances to the family members of those martyred during the People’s Movement II and scholarship for the children of those injured people during the Janandolan.
In monthly allowances for the martyrs’ families, the government spent a total of Rs156.29 million and Rs153.87 million for the injured of the popular uprising.
The children who lost both their parents are also regular recipients of the monthly allowance.
