Dr Govinda KC on Thursday warned of resuming the hunger strike that he ended last week, charging the government with failing to address his demands including the appointment of dean at the TU Institute of Medicine.

He said the government apathy for his concerns was evident as issues such as the dean’s appointment, which could be addressed immediately, had not been cared for.

“I have been cheated by the government time and again,” he said, accusing medical mafia of exerting undue pressure. Dr KC broke his 12-day fast on October 7 on the grounds that it would “inconvenience the people during the festivals”.

Appointment of the IoM dean on the basis of experience and seniority, endorsement of the Health Education Profession Education Bill,

fixing medical education fees as recommended by the Mathema Commission, a 10-year moratorium on establishment of medical/nursing colleges in Kathmandu Valley and impeachment of CIAA Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki are the key demands of Dr KC. Dr Jiwan Kshetry, one of his close aides, said the government was making a serious mistake by ignoring the demands of the fasting doctor. “The government has failed to realise the importance of quality medical education.”

In the past four years, Dr KC has staged nine hunger strikes demanding reforms in medical education. Not many of the agreements reached between him and the government have been implemented.
