FNCCI amends its statute; Rana to become next prez
It is now almost sure that Bhawani Rana, senior vice-president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), will become its next president. It is now almost sure that Bhawani Rana, senior vice-president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), will become its next president.
Rana’s chances of becoming the first female president of the largest umbrella body of the private sector became higher after its special general meeting (SGM) held on Thursday endorsed amendments made to the statute of the FNCCI.
The amended statute has
enabled automatic elevation of the senior vice-president to the post of president without taking part in the election.
However, polls will be held to elect senior vice-president. Currently, senior vice-presidents are chosen by executive committee members instead through a general election.
The new provision will come into effect once the next team assumes office. “The new provision would help FNCCI retain capable human resource, as senior vice-president is a person who has the potential to lead the organisation,” FNCCI President Pashupati Murarka told a press meet here on Thursday. “The new provision would also end
the practice of forming panels during the time of election of FNCCI president.”
Earlier, the FNCCI’s decision to make amendments to the statute through the SGM had landed in controversy, with the disgruntled faction moving the court seeking a stay order to suspend the process of holding the special general meeting.
Those unhappy with the decision to make amendments argued the proposed changes to the statute should be tabled during the annual general meeting and not the SGM. The other side, however, said SGMs were more participatory, as they cannot be held without the presence of 50 percent of general members, as against 40 percent required for the annual general meetings.
The Patan High Court on Wednesday, however, said there was no need to issue a stay order, paving the way for the FNCCI to hold the SGM. Although the FNCCI claimed Thursday’s SGM was conducted with the consent of the majority of the members, most of the past presidents, except for Ravi Bhakta Shrestha and Chandi Raj Dhakal, were not present during the meeting.
“It would have been better if all the past presidents had attended the meeting and raised the issues they were dissatisfied with,” said a senior member of the FNCCI on condition of anonymity. “Since the amendments have already been made, there should be no looking back or feeling guilty about it.”
