Morcha leaders set to meet Mukherjee today
Nov 3, 2016-
Top leaders of the agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha are scheduled to meet visiting Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday. President Mukherjee arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday on a three-day state visit at the invitation of President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
A Morcha leader privy to developments said that top guns of seven Tarai-based parties affiliated to the alliance would collectively meet the visiting Indian President. The meeting is scheduled for 8pm at Hotel Hyatt Regency in the Capital. Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Chairman Upendra Yadav, Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur, Sadhbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato and Tarai Madhes Sadhbhawana Party Chairman Rameshwor Raya Yadav are among the leaders likely to attend the meeting.
Sources said that the Morcha leadership would also meet with other high-level Indian delegates accompanying President Mukherjee on the visit. The Morcha leaders have dropped a hint that they would raise issues of Madhes. “It’s basically a courtesy visit but there might be discussions on issues concerning Madhes with President Mukherjee and other high-level delegates during the meeting,” said a Morcha leader, requesting anonymity. The meeting is taking place at a time when the Morcha leadership is in negotiation with the government to resolve disputes regarding the constitution. Last year, India stopped supplies of essential commodities, including fuel, after Nepal promulgated the new constitution without addressing concerns of the Madhesi parties.
