Over 200 cases of dengue, a mosquito-borne disease, have been reported in Damak, Jhapa, in a month’s time, the District Public Health Office said.
More than 30 dengue patients were admitted to local hospitals for treatment on Friday and Saturday alone. Dr Dipakraj Baral of Life Line Hospital in Damak said the health facility handles eight to 10 dengue cases every day.
“The disease is spreading in epidemic proportion,” said Baral, accusing the concerned authorities of not being serious about controlling the disease.
The infection has also been found in some health workers. Jiban Chamlagain, the vector control officer at the DPHO, said free blood tests were conducted at Life Line and Amda Hospitals.
Some patients have reached as far away as Dharan and Kathmandu for treatment. Nagendra Bhattarai, the officiating chief of Damak Hospital, said they have no blood testing facilities for dengue cases. “People are compelled to go to private hospitals,” he said.
Locals said the efforts of the authorities to control the disease were ineffective. Last year, a patient tested positive for dengue in Jhapa.
