Problems have surfaced at the ongoing general convention of Tarun Dal, the youth organisation of the Nepali Congress, due to a high number of aspirants caused by the failure to hold the conclave for over a decade.
The organising committee has failed to hold the closed-door session of the convention owing to disputes over representatives from about a dozen districts. A tentative agreement on the organisation’s statute is said to be reached.
According to the proposed composition of the central body, there will be a chairman, three vice-chairmen, two general secretaries and a treasurer. The central body will likely have 75 members.
Given the tussle between the establishment side and the group led by senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel, leaders are yet to agree on division of seats among the three major camps. Sources say the establishment side will keep about 60 percent seats while the Poudel faction will get 40 percent of the positions.
The dissatisfied Krishna Prasad Sitaula-led group wants election to pick the committee members. On Sunday evening, the camp announced Uttam Chapagain as its chairman candidate. “We think the best way out of the current leadership vacuum is holding the polls,’’ said Chapagain.
Party insiders, however, say senior leaders would eventually find consensus in seat distribution within a couple of days.
As Jit Jung Basnet and Siddhartha Koirala, both of whom are new to Tarun Dal, are in the fray for office bearer positions, other cadres have expressed their dissatisfaction at the leadership’s attempt to unanimously elect a new central body.
“As the current central committee is barred from standing for election, and with party leaders bringing their own representatives by cancelling some of the already held district conventions, it’s a huge disappointment for those who have invested years and years in the organisation,’’ said Radha Ghale, acting president of the Tarun Dal.
