A group of about 15 ANNISU-R activists, led by assistant in-charge of the university committee Sushil Khanal, barged into VC Ram Kantha Makaju’s office while he was away and vandalised office equipment, including a computer, photocopy machine and room heater.
No one could be arrested as the assailants fled the scene on motorcycles immediately after the incident. Deputy Superintendent of Police Nabinraj Rai said the main suspects involved in the vandalism were already identified. “Search is on to nab them,” he said.
Achyut Bhatta, the coordinator of ANNISU-R KU Chapter, said they had to resort to vandalism after the university management ignored repeated requests to meet their demands.
The ANNISU-R had submitted a memorandum to the university authority, drawing the attention towards its disregard for merit during admission in Medical Science and charging arbitrary fees by the colleges affiliated to the university.
Claiming responsibility for the incident, Bhatta said, “We were compelled to take the harsh step as our demands for reasonable admission fee and transparency were not addressed.”
Chairman of KU Professors’ Association Bedmani Dahal condemned the incident at an educational institution.
