As of Tuesday, 107 parties have updated their registration at the EC, the final deadline set by the election body a month ago. The commission had a total of 159 political parties on its list.
Article 269 of the constitution says the parties should be registered even for organisational purposes.
Article 271 says only the parties registered under Article 269 can take part in the polls. Almost all the parties that missed the EC deadline are smaller forces.
“This means any political party that failed to update its registration until Tuesday will be automatically disqualified,” said Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav.
Asked if those that failed to update their registration would be given a second chance, Yadav said it depends on a future EC decision and he would not be able to say anything about it at the moment.
The constitutional body had informed the parties about the constitutional provision through public notice, meeting and telephone.
Major parties including the Nepali Congress, the CPN-UML, the CPN (Maoist Centre), the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and many Madhes-based parties have updated their registration.
A total of 20 political parties represented in Parliament have re-registered themselves at the EC. The UML updated its registration on November 8 while the NC and the Maoist Centre did it on October 9.
The RPP-Nepal renewed itself on the final day. The Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party and the CPN (ML) were the first to report to the EC on October 19.
Initially, major parties were not supportive of the EC call for registration like a new political entity. The EC had held two rounds of consultation with the parties on the constitutional requirement.
Finally, the EC decided to have all the parties—registered or not— proceed for re-registration.
The parties have to submit details of their statute and manifesto, flag, logo, stamp, address of the headquarters, names of central committee members, funding and sources of income, and the leadership election process.
