Community school students still studying in temporary classrooms
Nov 16, 2016- None of the earthquake-hit community schools in Makwanpur have reconstructed their buildings.
According to the District Education Office (DEO), around 70,000 students are still studying in temporary classrooms after the earthquakes of 2015 caused damage and destruction to 462 of the 516 community school buildings in Makwanpur.
District Education Officer Birendra Jung Thapa said the government has not prioritised school building reconstruction even after 18 months of the devastating quakes.
The earthquakes of April 25 and May 12 had destroyed the buildings of 125 community schools in the district. More than 200 community school buildings were damaged. While the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has pledged to rebuild seven school buildings in the district, the government has not taken any initiative towards that end.
Dipak Pudasaine, the headmaster of Shree Primary School at Namtar VDC-1, said the school was still running its classes under a tent.
And with the winter approaching, he said, the students are having difficulty studying under a tent.
The winter is likely to affect hundreds of students in Namtar, Thaha, Gogane, Dandakharka, Tistung, Markhu and Arkha villages.
