CPN (Marxist) chief Gyawali passes away

NEPALGUNJ: CPN (Marxist) Central Chairman Madhav Gyawali died during treatment at Nepalgunj Medical College in Kohalpur on Saturday morning. He was 82. Gyawali had been suffering from renal disease for the past five years. He was admitted to the hospital on Friday for dialysis. “The dialysis was successful. But his condition suddenly deteriorated after midnight and he passed away at around 2 am,” said his son Dipak. He was cremated on the bank of the Rapti river as per Hindu rituals on Saturday afternoon. One of the prominent communist leaders in the country, Gyawali had entered politics when he was just 20 years old. He was elected as the CPN-UML central member after the merger of the CPN (ML) and the CPN (Marxist) in 1992. But a year later, he left the party and formed a separate CPN (Marxist) with himself as its general secretary. He was party chief for the past six years. Late Gyawali is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters.
2 picnickers died in jeep crash
KASKI: Two persons died and 10 others sustained injuries in a jeep accident at Dobilla in Pokhara-17 on Saturday. Police identified the deceased as Lisa Mahitra, 14, of Kolkata in India and Arabinda Chaudhary, 20, of Hasuwa-6 in Rautahat district. The victims had been staying in Pokhara. The vehicle was carrying picnickers. (PR)
