After the RPP-Nepal and the RPP merged recently, Thapa was elected the chairman of the new RPP.
The united party has 37 lawmakers. The then-RPP is already in government with its two members as ministers.
Thapa was the DPM and foreign minister in the KP Sharma Oli-led government. His party RPP-Nepal chose to be an opposition party after the Oli government was toppled.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s chief political adviser Chakrapani Khanal said the government had been approaching Thapa for support to implementing the constitution after further amendment.
Chief Whip of the RPP-Nepal Parliamentary Party Dilnath Giri confirmed the informal offer but said the party was more focussed on internal unity following the merger.
