Malnutrition stalks children in Bajhang

Dec 1, 2016-More than 400 children under the age of five in Bajhang district are suffering from malnutrition, according to an ongoing study that is being conducted by the District Health Office.

Of the total 2,796 children examined so far, the DHO has diagnosed malnutrition related conditions in 410 children. 

“One hundred twelve children under five were found with severe malnutrition while 298 others suffered from mild malnutrition,” said Dr Sunil Gajurel, who oversees nutrition programme in the district.

The DHO has been running a study to identify the number of malnourishment sufferers victims for the last two months. 

There are approximately 22,000 children under the age of five in Bajhang. The DHO said number of malnourished children could rise significantly when the study is completed. 

“The present data was collected from the district headquarters and its surrounding areas only. The situation of malnutrition is even worse in remote villages,” said Dr Gajurel. 

According to the DHO, it has mobilised health workers to examine the children and provide them treatment. Dr Bishnu Khatiwada, the chief at DHO, said the children with severe malnutrition have been receiving treatment at the District Hospital and the health institutions at Bhatekhola, Melbisauna, Bhairbsthan, Chhanna, Lekgaun, Khiratadi, Rayal and Deulekh VDCs.
