More than 85 per cent of the total HIV infection in the country has been found to have been transmitted from unprotected sex, according to a study by the National Centre or AIDS and STD Control (NCASC).
People who inject drugs, sex workers particularly transgenders, inmates and migrant workers are at high risk of HIV infection, said Dr Tarun Poudel, director, NCASC, at a programme on Tuesday. According to Dr Poudel, risk of HIV risk was increasing in the country due to lack of awareness and failure to observe precautions.
Every year there are 1,331 new HIV patients in the country, according to the NCASC.
According to the data maintained by the NSASC, as of July, the reported cases of HIV infection stood at 28,865.
