An executive committee meeting of the party on Saturday directed all its subordinate bodies to start reparations for the four-day general convention.
Two rightist forces—Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and the RPP—merged on November 22 to become the RPP. With 37 seats in the 595-strong Parliament, it is the fourth largest party in the country. During the merger, there was an agreement to hold the convention within three months to elect a new leadership.
According to Dilnath Giri, chief whip of the party, the committee decided to hold the district conventions by February 4, 2016 and formed a statute committee led by Buddhiman Tamang. In a new power-sharing arrangement, Pashupati Shumsher Rana was made the national chairman while Kamal Thapa retained the top post. The convention will elect one chairman and a 150-member Central Working Committee. Currently there are 300 members in the CWC.
Giri said the executive committee failed to develop the party’s position on the amendment bill registered in the Legislature-Parliament. “We will hold discussion with stakeholders including the Madhesi parties on the issue before coming up with our position formally,” he said. Another meeting of the party has been scheduled for Monday.
