Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal (SSFN) Chairman Upendra Yadav has said that the Tarai region should be federated into provinces based on “the Indian model”.
“We want provinces in Madhes that cannot be ruled by non-Madhesis,” Yadav said, addressing his party’s programme in Ganjabhawanipur on Monday.
He cited the Indian modality of federal provinces where a Punjabi cannot rule in the state of Bihar. “Just like India’s Bihar police, Bihar court, Bihar administration, Bihar public service,” Yadav continued, “we want Madhes police, Madhes court, Madhes administration and so on.”
He accused CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli of enticing violence in western Nepal. “When the state is preparing to grant rights to one community, is it good to organise protest from another community? Is this the feature of a communist?” he questioned. “Oli was not willing to grant us the rights when he was the prime minister. But he has now started a protest as another government has brought up the constitution amendment bill. What kind of discrimination is this?” he added.
The SSFN chief said the Madhesi people have been oppressed for centuries and now the minority community wants equal participation in every entity of the government.
“The discriminatory governments never wanted to develop Tarai. Now, they are playing another game of preventing India, among other donor countries, from helping develop the southern plains,” Yadav said, claiming that the government disrupted the construction of the Postal Highway in Madhes on various pretexts.
