It is hard to tell where the no-man’s-land begins and where it ends without the boundary markers, one APF officer said.
According to the District Administration Office, there were 43 main, 66 subsidiary and 137 minor boundary markers along the Nepal-India border in Bardiya. Today, there are only 75.
Some people living near border area say the Indian side has encroached around one kilometre area at Bansi forest which falls into Nepal’s territory. As there are no border indicators, they say the Indian side is taking over the Nepali land.
Sahadat Ali Dhobi of Gulariya-9 claimed more than 2 bighas of land that he owns was forcefully taken over by Rajdev Gaud of Bahraich, India.
Dhobi said he was no longer allowed to use the land despite having legal documents to prove that he owns the property.
Gaud and his friends had reportedly issued death threat to Dhobi when he tried to reclaim his land.
Assistant District Officer Shreenath Paudel said the encroachment issue will be settled after a joint team from both countries have surveyed the border area.
The missing boundary markers will also be re-established after the survey, he added.
