“Talks are on with the UML chair regarding both the amendment bill and elections. If possible we would like to hold local polls in the new setup, otherwise we could also go with the existing local units,” Deuba said while addressing a programme organised by Nepal Students’ Union, a sister wing of the NC, in the Capital on Monday. He also stated that the ruling coalition was committed to holding polls.
Indicating at the UML, Deuba said that some parties were deliberately trying to weaken democracy in the country by relating the federal demarcation in the amendment bill to nationalism. “What will the UML gain by needlessly provoking the people of a few specific districts?” Deuba questioned.
The government has recently tabled an amendment bill with an aim to bring the Madhes-based parties on board. It also holds the responsibility of holding local, state and federal polls by January 2018, as stipulated by the constitution.
Speaking on the occasion, NC General Secretary Sashank Koirala stressed on forging consensus among major political forces to give a logical end to the stalemate that has surfaced after the registration of amendment bill in Parliament.
Former NC general secretary Prakash Man Singh urged the party leadership to take the lead in the statute implementation process. “It was also under our leadership that the statute was promulgated,” Singh recalled.
Foreign Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat urged the party cadres and leaders to unite for the constitution implementation. NSU Chairman Nain Singh Mahar and Tarun Dal Chairman Jeet Jung Basnet said the youths need to be politically aware for implementing the statute.
