In a tournament that offered five gold medals, India swept men’s singles and doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Vietnam won the only remaining gold after Thuy Linh Nguyen triumphed in the women’s singles.
In an all-India men’s singles final, Abhishek Yelegar defeated Siddharth Thakur in straight sets of 21-16, 21-14. The champion walked away with cash purse of US $450 and runner-up Thakur took home US $228.
Nguyen also had straight sets victory in the women’s singles final overcoming Devi Yunit Indah Sari 21-17, 21-16. The first and second place finishers got US $450 and US $228 respectively. In the men’s doubles, Arjun MR and Ram Chandra Shlok of India eased to a 21-18, 21-15 victory over Rizwan Azam and Kasif Ali of Pakistan.
Likewise, Jakkampudi Meghna and Poorvisha S Ram landed India the women’s doubles title defeating compatriots Anuska Parikh and Harika Veludurthi 21-16, 21-12. The only competitive game of the day came in the mixed doubles when Indian duo of Saurav Sharma and Parikh had to rally from a set down to beat fellow country mates Venkat Gau Prasad and Juhi Dewangan 14-21, 21-19, 21-19.
The winners and runners-up in the doubles category got the share of US $450 and US $228 respectively. Minister of Supplies Deepak Bohora among other handed over the prizes to the winners. In a tournament organised by Nepal Badminton Association, India had the highest number of participants fielding 23 shuttlers.
Hosts Nepal had 21 participants with Bangladesh (nine), Vietnam (seven) and Pakistan (six) fielding most shuttlers. Iran, Indonesia and Malaysia had three participants each.
