The novel is based on the contemplations of a 12 year old girl who is compelled to live in a menstrual hut for 22 days straight, following the Chhaupadi Pratha—a tradition that banishes women from everyday life during their menstruation.
Celebrities such as actor Hari Bansha Acharya, former Miss Nepal Malvika Subba, and novelist Amar Neupane, among others were present during the event.
Speaking about the book, former Miss Nepal Malvika Subba said, “The book discusses very delicate aspects of a girl’s life.” She added, “It’s a shame that our society disgraces such an inevitable and a vital biological process in a woman’s life. Fortunately, I come from a family that does not believe in this dangerous tradition. But, when I read about Chhaupadi, it agonises and breaks my heart.”
Novelist Neupane, asserted, “Being a man, writing a book on a girl’s suffering is not an easy feat to achieve. I have learned this lesson the hard way. But, when I read the book, I did not for once feel that this book was written by a man and not by the protagonist herself.” He further commented on the language of the book, “The language in the book is regional and therefore adds value to the whole story.”
Comedian Acharya, stated that even though Chhaupadi Pratha gravely affects only women, even men should actively participate in abolishing it. He pleaded, “I would request the men to volunteer and put themselves in the women’s shoes. Only once you go through what the women do during their period will you understand the pain and agony of the process.”
The novel is published by Fineprint Books at Rs 300.
