According to a press statement, Thupten Gelek, 44, was arrested in possession of IRs 363,500 in the denominations of 500 and 1,000. According to police, the arrestee had 210 notes of 1,000 denominations and 307 notes in 500 denominations in his possession.
Gelek was set to board an Indigo Air flight to New Delhi.
The banned Indian notes hidden in a suitcase were found during a regular security check.
Police said that Gelek was taken into custody for an inquiry to find out how he had collected such a huge amount of money in the denominations that have ceased to be legal tender and the purpose of taking the cash to India.
India announced on November 8 that it was pulling bank notes in the denominations of 500 and 1,000 from circulation.
Nepal Rastra Bank has said IRs 36.5 million in the denominations of 500 and 1,000 are in the banking channel. But it is not sure how much Indian money in the denominations of 500 and 1,000 is outside the banking channel.
Nepalis are said to be possessing billions of notes that were banned on November 8 by India.
