Smuggling of medicinal herbs has increased in Bajura in the recent times, according to the District Forest Office.
Plants like Padamchal (Noble rhubarb), Chiraito (Felwort), Jatamasi (Spikenard), Lokta (Daphne shrub), Nirmasi (Delphinium), and Satuwa (Paris polyphylla) have
been found being illegally exported to different parts of the country from different parts of the district, DFO officials said.
Police and DFO officials recently intercepted nearly 36 tonnes of Jatamasi at Kolti Airport and Dansanghu village in the district. Deputy Superintendent of Police Dal Bahadur Bogati said it was discovered upon investigation that the concerned transporters had obtained clearance permit for only 9.7 tonnes of Jatamasi which costs up to Rs 700 per kilogram.
Ten people were arrested and handed over to the DFO for investigation.
District Forest Officer Besindraraj Subedi said the office was preparing to file a case against the suspects.
Bichhaya, Dahakot, Manakot, Badimalika and Budhinanda in Bajura are home to various plant species that are prized for their medicinal and aromatic properties.
Subedi said protecting Bajura’s precious herbs from overexploitation was a challenge because they are usually found in remote areas and the DFO does not have the human resources to conduct regular monitoring.
