- saff women’s championship
Jan 3, 2017-
Nepal crashed out of the fourth Saff Women’s Championship losing 3-1 to defending champions India in the semi-finals here at the Kanchenjunga Stadium on Monday.
The loss meant Nepal failed to make it to the final for the first time in the tournament history, having played three consecutive title matches. In all three previous final meetings, Nepal had lost to India. Kamala Dev, Indumati Kathiresan and Sasmita Malik scored one each for India. Sabitra Bhandari pulled one back for Nepal.
Nepal coach Kumar Thapa had no qualms over the loss and kept his held high. “We did not end up as champions but we played like it. It was like the final for us and we were unlucky that we couldn’t progress to the title match. I am proud of my team and the way we played today,” said the former national team and Manang Marshyangdi Club midfielder.
India kept Nepal’s goal machine Bhandari on check, who managed to score from the spot in the 75th minute when her side was two goals down. India had taken a 44th minute lead through Kamala Devi who scored from the box after receiving a pass from Manisha Pana. Indumati doubled the lead in the 58th minute taking full advantage of defensive lapse by rounding off two Nepali defenders and chipping over Nepali custodian Anjila Subba.
Nepal breathed some life in the game when they were awarded a spot kick after an India defender got her hands to the ball inside the penalty area. Bhandari struck to score her 11th goal of the tournament. However, Sasmita put the issue beyond doubt slamming home in the 84th minute.
Nepal coach Thapa was not satisfied with the refereeing in the game. “The first goal should not have been counted as it was scored clearly from an offside position,” said the disappointed Nepal coach Thapa. “To add to our misery, we were denied three penalties. The quality of the referee was not up to the standard. Even the opposition coach was complaining about refereeing,” the Nepal coach.
