Sankata Club of Kathmandu pipped Dukestar FC of Bhutan 1-0 to enter the quarter-finals of the Hetauda Gold Cup football tournament on Monday.

The 84th minute goal from man-of-the-match Anil Gurung separated the two teams. Gurung converted his shot from the edge of the area to set up a clash with Tribhuvan Army Club on Wednesday. Sankata protected the lead thanks largely to their goalkeeper Bishal Shrestha who thwarted one and only threatening Bhutanese attempt on goal late on.

Sankata coach Sailesh Karmacharya said they were unable to field their first choice players in the tournament as they were playing two tournaments simultaneously. “We had to field two teams: one for Kakarbhitta Gold Cup in Jhapa and one for this tournament,” said Karmacharya trying to defend his team’s battling performance.

Dukestar coach Kota Namage rued on the absence of their five key players: three from the national team and two foreign recruits. “Since we got a late invitation, we did not have enough time for visa processing for those players which definitely weakened our squad,” added the Dukestar coach.

The eventual champions will receive Rs 500,000 and the runners-up will take

home Rs 300,000, while the best player of the tournament will earn Rs 50,000.

Sahara Club of Pokhara will take on Delhi United of India in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
