While Bajura, Achham, Dadeldhura, Darchula and Baitadi districts have witnessed snowfall since Saturday, Jumla saw its first snowfall of this season on Sunday. Most of the road sections in the high altitude areas of these districts have been disrupted due to snow.
Scores of vehicles have been stranded in various sections along the Bhimdutta Highway that connects various hill districts of far-west with the Tarai districts.
“We have been stranded for the past 12 hours. The snow has rendered the road impassable,” a passenger stranded in Nachanthali area in Baitadi told the Post over telephone.
He said there was three feet of snow in the area.
The local administrations in Bajhang and Baitadi were making efforts to clear the snow from the road to resume transportation on Sunday.
Chief District Officer of Bajhang Sunil Khanal said dozers have been mobilised in Anarkholi area to clear the snow.
There has also been a sharp drop in temperatures in the hill and mountain districts of far and mid-western regions because of rainfall. People in many districts have been forced to remain indoors due to freezing cold.
Vehicle skids off snowy road, injuring 29 soldiers
A Nepal Army (NA) vehicle skidded off the road covered in snow and fell some 10 metres near Saukharka area along Attariya-Dadeldhura road section on Sunday. Twenty-nine soldiers were injured. Eleven soldiers were airlifted to the Capital for treatment. The soldiers were returning to their barrack after clearing the snow along the Hagultelek-Saukhark road section.
Frost damages vegetables
Severe frost has damaged vegetables in several villages in Mugu district. The farmers in Hennikandh, Nigale, Lalitum and Kalapalta were greatly affected after the vegetables died due to frost exposure. Agriculture technicians have suggested the farmers in the district to cover their crops with plastic or straws to protect them from frost .
