Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the problems faced by the Nepalis after the demonetisation move in India would be resolved as soon as possible.

In a meeting with Nepal’s Ambassador Deep Kumar Upadhyay, Jaitley said New Delhi was aware of the impact of demonetisation on Nepal and efforts would be made to address the problems. Jaitley was positive about making arrangements to exchange the banned notes, Upadhyay told the Post.

There were official talks on Thursday between Nepal and India about resolving the crisis. The Nepali side presented a modality concerning the technical aspects of exchanging the demonetised Indian banknotes of 500 and 1,000 denominations.

The India side, however, expressed reservations over some provisions and requested revision to them. The two sides agreed to resolve the technical issues through diplomatic channels. However, it is not sure how long it will take to resolve the issue.

A technical team led by Chintamani Siwakoti, deputy governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank, had handed over the modality to officials of the Reserve Bank of India in Delhi. Upadhyay said talks are going on at various levels to ensure that the scrapped notes are exchanged without further delay.
