Locals of Bihawar in Kavre district have initiated a number of efforts to turn the village into a tourist destination. On Saturday, they started home stay on the auspicious occasion of Maghe Sangkranti, a major Hindu festival. Likewise, paragliding test flights have been conducted at Gurdum Dada of Kushadevi.
“We have initiated this process to explore the tourism potential of this place,” said Rameshwar Thapa, president of the Bihabar Area Interest Group Committee. “The paragliding test flight was a success. We will now work to commercialise the sport.”
Located at an elevation of 2,450 metres above sea level, one can have a mesmerizing view of the Himalayan range from Mt Kanchenjunga in the east to Dhaulagiri in the west.
Kavre district, according to Nepal Mountaineering Association Vice-President Bikram Shah, is a perfect location for trekking and cycling. “Kavre is a perfect destination for activities like trekking and cycling close to the Kathmandu Valley,” Shah said. “The area has great potential.”
According to Shah, locals should focus on the development of infrastructure and commercialization. In a bid to promote the region as a cycling destination, 32 cyclists belonging to the Nepal Cycling Association cycled all the way to Nagidada in Kushadevi from Lakuri Bhanjyang.
Purushottam Adhikari, secretary of the interest group committee, said that the development of infrastructure was their immediate objective.
One can trek for four to five days. Our quest to develop this place as a tourism
destination is also being supported by the government,” Adhikari said.
The Ministry of Tourism is constructing a path starting at Chandragiri and leading to Lakuri Bhanjyang, Phulchoki and finally Kushadevi.
