Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has announced Rs 50 million for snow leopard conservation programme in the country. The announcement was made at an inaugural session of the second steering committee meeting of Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme in Kathmandu on Friday.

High-level delegations from the snow-leopard range countries are participating in the meeting organised to discuss about conservation efforts to protect the endangered snow leopards that share habitats along the mountain landscapes.

Prime Minister Dahal also announced the launch of Snow Leopard Action Plan for Nepal that will focus on developing special zones along the mountain landscapes for the conservation of snow leopards. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching and illegal trade, and climate change are some of the challenges in snow leopard conservation. Around 300 to 500 snow leopards are said to be living in Nepal.
