Nepal ranked as third most corrupt country in SAsia

Nepal may have moved two spots in the global corruption index, but it still remains the third most corrupt country in South Asia.

The Corruption Percent Index-2016 published by Transparency International (TI) on Wednesday has ranked Nepal at 131st place—out 176 countries—with a score of 29.

Nepal managed to climb two places compared to last year due to the country’s political transition to peace, but experts refuse to accept it as an improvement. “This is not even a significant score to call it an improvement,” said Surya Nath Upadhyay, former chief commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, the country’s apex anti-corruption agency.

Shree Hari Aryal, president of Transparency International-Nepal, said, “Systematic corruption in the country is the result of unstable government. To reduce the rate of corruption, there must be continuous pressure on government agencies; people’s representative should be held accountable.”
