The play Dikshant, penned by Shiva Rijal and directed by Ghimire Yubraj, is currently being staged at Shilpee Theatre, in Battisputali.
The play taps into the issue of caste-based discrimination prevalent even today in our society. Although the answer remains elusive even by the end of the play, it is an attempt to question the supremacy of the powerful against the powerless. The one-and-half hour long play is a satire on the contemporary Nepali society and the hypocrisy that it nurtures.
The play begins with a convocation ceremony at a Kathmandu-based university, where Prakash Bishowkarma (Matrika), a brilliant, dalit graduate hailing from far-west region slaps the chief guest for politicising dalit issues.
The event takes the story forth to its course, depicting the struggles of a very sharp and educated dalit in this modern day Nepal.
The play features live background score composed by Nhyoo Bajracharya and songs penned by Biplav Pratik to help audience resonate to the milieu of the story.
The play is on every day, except for Tuesdays, and will run through Feb 11.
