Unions are found to be dispatching letters asking for monetary help. In an undated letter acquired by the Post, All Nepal National Independent Student Union (Revolutionary) Central Committee Chairman Narendra Neupane has demanded “financial” support for the election. Addressed to a campus chief, the letter notes that assistance should be provided through A/C payee cheques.
Many other unions are also seeking cash for the polls that had been stalled for eight years. The FSU election will begin on February 12, with voting scheduled for February 25. Students below 28 years can take part in the polls at their respective colleges.
Police have begun close scrutiny of government colleges for possible vandalism and clashes. On Tuesday, Shanker Gautam, chairman of the All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU) unit at Saraswati Campus, Thamel, was injured after he was attacked by supporters of the ANNISU-R, a sister wing of the CPN (Maoist Centre). The ANNFSU is the student wing of the CPN-UML.
Police from the Metropolitan Police Circle, Sorakhutte, said they are looking for the assailants.
Superintendent of Police Pradhyumna Karki, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Range, Teku, said they would not enter the campus premises until the administration requests for help.
“In many cases, the college administrations don’t report to us. Yet we have asked all our units to remain alert as there are possible chances of clashes and vandalism,” said SP Karki.
Police have been alerted to remain vigilant in areas around Tri-Chandra Campus, Saraswati Campus, Patan Campus, Pashupati Campus, Ratna Rajya Campus and Law Campus among others.
