Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka rode on a magnificent 222-run opening wicket stand between Suranga Sampath and Ruwan Wasantha to post a mammoth 274-2.
Nepal could only make 143-5 during their reply as they lost their fourth match in five games. Nepal’s only success— a six-wicket victory—came against South Africa on February 2. South Africa had scored 146-5 before Nepal replied with 149-4 in 17.3 overs. It was Nepal’s second victory against Test-playing nation having defeated Bangladesh in the 2012.
Sampath retired hurt after scoring 111 runs off just 48 ball. His explosive knock included 19 boundaries and a six as well. Wasantha made 76 off 41 deliveries with eight hits to the fence. KS Dura and Ruwan Karunathilaka carried their bats till the end to add more woes to the Nepali team. Dura scored 12-ball 32 unbeaten runs and Karunathilaka made 18-ball 33 not out. None of the Nepali bowlers were able to take wickets as both the wickets to fall came courtesy run outs.
Opening batsman Sunil Thapa Magar top scored for Nepal with 38 runs, his 30-ball stay included four boundaries. Kritan Duwal remained unbeaten 37 runs off 47 deliveries and Padam Bahadur Badaila made not out 23 as Nepal fell way short of their target. MV Ralalage and CK Suriyaarachchi claimed one wicket each for Sri Lanka. Three other Nepali batsmen were run out.
Nepal, the only not-Test playing team to compete in the tournament, next play England at Karnataka State Cricket Association Ground on Tuesday before taking on India on Wednesday and New Zealand on Thursday. Top four teams from round robin league qualify for the semis.
