Lawyers’ stir over judge appointment

Lawyers from all eight districts in Province 2 staged sit-in protests outside the courthouses, denouncing the judge appointments in high courts on Monday.
The agitating lawyers have said that the appointment process of 80 judges in high courts violated the principle of inclusion and proportional representation, as enshrined in the constitution and the Judical Council Act.
Sudhir Kumar Karna, president of Nepal Bar Assoication (NBA), Birgunj, said they will continue to protest until the appointment is withdrawn.
The lawyers in Province 2 have boycotted all court proceedings from January 31 in protest of judge appointments.
Meanwhile, Sanghiy Samajbadi Forum Nepal has also extended its solidarity with the lawyeres’ protest. The party vice chairman, Lal Babu Raut, and the party’s Parsa district chairman, Pradip Yadav, attended the sit-in protest of the lawyers in the district in a show of support on Monday.
In Janakpur, lawyers have accused the NBA of letting them down by agreeing to withdraw the portest at the request of Judicial Council last week. They have also warned of relingquishing the NBA membership.
