Chepang FOLK deprived of housing aid
-, MALEKHU (DHADING)
Feb 13, 2017-
Chandra Bahadur Chepang’s house collapsed during the 2015 April earthquake, but he is yet to receive housing reconstruction aid.
When the government deployed a team of technical experts to Simthali in Mahadevsthan VDC-2, Dhading, to assess the damage caused by the earthquake, one of the homes they had inspected was Chepang’s. However, Chepang said, the team did not mention his name on the reconstruction aid list.
The Chepang family is currently living in a makeshift shelter with a thatched roof.
Chepang has already appealed to the VDC office for assistance. He said there has been no response for the past two years.
An NGO has promised to build a toilet for the family, but no one has pledged to build his home.
“My two daughters are disabled. We cannot go on living like this forever. Why isn’t the government doing anything?” Chepang complained. “We are going to die waiting for the aid.”
Many Chepang people are living in temporary shelters and local school buildings after their houses were flattened by earthquake.
As many as 25 Chepang families at Mahadevsthan VDC were displaced by the earthquake. None of them have been mentioned on the reconstruction aid list.
In Jogimara VDC, 52 Chepang households have not received the reconstruction aid. They accused the government of neglecting them.
