In a message issued on Thursday, President Bhandari hailed the struggle for democracy that abolished the 104-year-old Rana oligarchy on this day 66 years ago. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal also extended his best wishes to the people later in the day.
The Vice President expressed his tributes to the brave fighters who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for democracy.
VP Pun, in his statement, said that even after the restoration of democracy in 1990, people had to wage the historical people’s movements. As a consequence, the new constitution promulgated in 2015 has institutionalised the political achievements and the democratic republic, federal, secular, proportional and inclusive governance system,” read the statement.
Pun stressed the need for economic development through political stability with the implementation of the constitution and holding three elections in the local, provincial and central levels by January 21, 2018.
Deposed king Gyanendra Shah also issued a congratulatory note to the Nepalis on the occasion, citing his grandfather the late Tribhuvan’s contribution to ushering in a democratic era. Shah hailed democracy as the best political system, but emphasised a “unique democracy”, founded on the “country’s soil”. This is the ideology of the Panchayat regime, introduced by his father the late Mahendra Shah. After Gyanendra assumed executive powers, people revolted against monarchy and ousted him in 2007. Shah stated that the regime is impermanent but the country is the “ultimate truth”.
