Dahal to hold final talks with parties
Feb 19, 2017- Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has decided to hold one more round of talks with parties before announcing dates for local level elections, in an indication that the government might not announce the dates on Sunday.
During a meeting with Election Commission (EC) officials on Friday, PM Dahal had told them that he would take the proposal of announcing poll dates to the Cabinet on Sunday. On Wednesday, PM Dahal had assured Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav that he would announce dates for local elections by Sunday.
But in an interesting turn of events on Saturday, the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha, which had been prodding the government not to announce polls until the constitution amendment bill is endorsed, told PM Dahal in clear terms that they would rather server ties with the governing coalition and launch fresh protests the day poll dates are announced.
The Morcha’s stiff resistance has forced PM Dahal to change tack. But it is not only the Morcha’s opposition that is holding PM Dahal back.
According to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office, even his key coalition partner, the Nepali Congress, does not seem to be very keen to go for local level elections.
According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, party headquarters members had suggested that Dahal hold “final” discussions with the NC, the EC and the Madhesi Morcha and announce dates for local elections in a day or two.
