Olawale Oladipa Afeez and Bishal Rai scored for the top-tier Nepali team. After a goalless first half, MMC needed only eight minutes into the second half to take the lead. Afeez received a long pass from Rohit Chand and the striker chipped it over the advancing Mohammedan goalkeeper Mamun Khan. Man-of-the-match Afeez also had a hand in the second MMC goal as he fed Rai to add to their tally.
Mohammedan are currently at the 10th spot in the top tier of Bangladesh’s domestic league.
Earlier, MMC squandered several goal scoring opportunities. Samson was unlucky as his shot hit the woodwork in the 32md minute.
Skipper Anil Gurung wasted another chance two minutes later after nicely set up by Afeez. Chand and Sujal Shrestha also failed to find back of the net late in the first half, while in the only notable chance the Mohammedan had was when Dawa Sisse’s attempt was foiled by MMC custodian Dinesh Thapa Magar in the 43rd minute.
MMC coach Chhiring Lopsang Gurung said his side failed to open the scoring in the first half but as the game wore on they were able to stamp their authority.
“We improved in the latter half and were able to score goals,” said the MMC coach of the first win in Group ‘B’. Skipper Gurung said the proper coordination in the second half was key to their success in scoring goals. Mohammedan coach Abdul Kayum Santu blamed their porous defence for the loss. “
MMC next play Aasmayi, the Afghani Premier League champions, in their Group ‘B’ match on Wednesday before taking on Chittagong Abahani on Friday. Chittagong are the defending champions and had won the Bangladeshi League in 2013.
