Bakraha flood victims announce protest

- Post Report, DAMAK

Feb 23, 2017- The Bakraha river flood victims, of Madhumalla in Morang district, have threatened to go on a protest if their demand of embankment construction is not addressed immediately. Organising a press meet in Urlabari on Tuesday, they announced various protest programmes, including a hunger strike. The flood-hit people have accused the local administration of ignoring their repeated requests to build an embankment to mitigate the flood risk in their settlements.

The Bakraha river flood was displacing scores of families every year. Man Bahadur Shrestha, one of the flood victims, said hundreds of homes were flooded at Matthillo Kaseni, Beteni, Dhhapad, and Khomjhoda settlemetns of Madhumalla in September and October of last year. At least 60 families were rendered homeless in the incident, he added.
