In his address at a function organised on Thursday on the occasion of the Army Day, Chhetri said the NA was mindful of the challenges posed by some secessionist forces that have threatened to “disrupt communal harmony and to take up arms”.
Stating that such remarks posed challenges to the age-old peaceful coexistence among various communities in Nepal, Chhetri said the Army was always ready to defend national unity, integrity and communal harmony.
Although Chhetri did not refer to any force specifically, he was hinting at CK Raut, who has been campaigning for “Free Madhes”, and CPN Chairman Netra Bikram Chand, who has warned of launching another armed struggle. The Army would carry out its responsibilities within the limits set by the national laws, human rights and international humanitarian laws. Chhetri also highlighted efforts being made to modernise the Army and to enhance military diplomacy through joint exercises and special trainings. He said the defence force was preparing to conduct joint military drills with the armies of China and Bangladesh.
